To blog or to keep a diary?

I have always kept a diary, ever since I was a kid. It kept me organised so that I don't forget things to do or things I had done. Unfortunately I threw away most of my childhood and teenage diaries. Then I decided to keep a diary and having seen what Geninne Zlatkis does in her diaries I decided to add little colourful paintings or stickers and photos. It looked much better I admit but after a couple of months I couldn't do it any more. I wanted to start a blog ever since I found the resurrection fern blog and started following it and reading it every day.It inspired me. My dear man gave me a lovely diary as a New Year's Eve present this year. It is one with the flower fairies by Cicely Mary Barker. I love this artist. I have her complete anthology of her flower fairies and poems. I also have an address book sent to me by my dear friend Cathy in England. It is so nice to see all the details of the flowers and the fairies all in one. So what should I do now? Keep a beautiful diary handwritten and adorned by so many beautiful little flower fairies? Or blog which has so much potential in itself? Or do both?

I'm glad you have decided to do both. I have always thought of a diary/journal as a very personal venue for writing about one's inner most feelings, troubles, frustrations, interactions with or about people you are close to. I see it as way of venting to one's self of thoughts that he/she may not be able to or want to share with others.......a private, intimate, reflective discussion with one's self.

On the other hand, I think a blog is more a public venue and also another way of sharing with people who you are connected with. It is a way of sharing your personal life.........likes and dislikes but maybe not reaching to that inner depth of a journal. A blog tends to foster communication with others.

Either way or both ways of writing, it can only deepen the author's love of the written word and impower the author to open that window into self.
